I’m still bleeding happiness from everywhere.
So first advice ; best way to be like me is, to not be like me actually. I mean personally I started to feel free in the path I choosed when all my references stoped to be my guides and became more and more digested by my… mind, soul… or whatever.
But yeah I had some virtual mentors. During a long time it was Akira Toriyama, capcom designer Nishimura Kinu, or french comic drawer Moebius.
But really my biggest influence was the collective Catfish Deluxe’s work I did with Bill Otomo and Fabien Mense. We really did influence each others, pushing ourselves over the top all the time. Those kind of collaboration are priceless.
For the stuffs to watch or to read I’m pretty sure you can handle it yourself, today you can find everything makes youre eyes happy very easily. what I can say as an advice is ; dont limitate yourself to just comics and animation.
As an example I’m a huge fan of Tim & Eric’s shows (it’s not animation), it inspire me in many ways but I doubt it would be a valuable reference for everybody. Life is also a pretty good inspiration, especially when you transcend it trough a story of your own.
Here is som rules I discovered during those 10 years of career :
-notions of good and bad taste are bullshit and limitates your superpowers.
-the begining of most good project (meaning something you’re happy to work on) is a random daydreaming without any contraints. In other words by something you cannot call a “project” in the first place.
- If you start a project with the buisness plan step , in the best case what you’ll have is a good-selling piece of crap. In the worst cases a bad- selling piece of crap. In the worst worst case you’ll have nothing because economic reallity destroyed all your dreams before you had the occasion to start anything (this last point could also be consider as the best best case, cause at least you learned something).
